Ruben KorumangapikIn this piece, master carver Ruben Komangapik depicts the importance of an Inuk woman in her society. This sea goddess Sedna looks over the Inuk hunting a seal, and graces him with strength to continue the journey of his hunting duties. This is necessary for surviving the long chilling winters.

What is especially captivating about this piece, is the tremendous detail, shine and exquisite craftsmanship, only possible by a master carver. When subjected to a light, Its ghostly echo comes to life with a magnificent explosion of color.

Inuvik Inuit Art Festival - Sedna by special guest, Ruben Komangapik

Over the years, my tastes have greatly evolved. I now truly appreciate pieces like this. Pieces that tell a story, depict life of the traditional Eskimo, and are timeless.

Ruben Anton Komangapik creates work unlike most Inuit art. Although influenced by traditional stories, songs, and legends heard from his grandfather, he has a contemporary sensibility, often combining the more typical materials with precious metals and gemstones or, for example, contrasting the roughness of porous whalebone with the smooth texture of ivory. He completed the jewelry and metalwork program at Nunavut Arctic College, Iqaluit (1995), and has been a full-time artist since the late 1990s. Komangapik has been featured in numerous exhibitions and publications. Recently he was the subject of Isuma: The Art and Imagination of Ruben Anton Komangapik, with text by his mother, Dorothee Komangapik.
