This is a beautiful rendition of a standing bear by Louis Uttaq.

The Gjoa Haven carvers produce sculptures that are not imitated or replicated by any of the artists in the other Arctic regions. 

I have come to understand that the sculptures have a distinct Gjoa Haven personality and spirit. 

For example, this charming fellow has a childlike and impish countenance, but at the same time, he is also a dominating and aggressive bear.  A bear that could end the life of a human.

I love the rawness and ferocity of this standing polar bear. At the same time, I just had to smile when I saw photograph of his hind end. 

This would be an excellent first piece if you are thinking of adding a Gjoa Haven carving to your collection.
