FANTASTIC MOVEMENTS 

We recently discovered a new artist, Derrald Taylor.  He lives in the Northwest Territories of Canada.  The Canadian government offers little support to the artists in this region, so often the carvers struggle to find galleries who will carry their work.

Because of this situation, we stumbled onto a hidden gem. 

Derrald is a “once in a lifetime” gift to the art world.  Three years ago I met Derrald and now I can't wait for him to send me his magnificent carvings. Derrald is a masterfully skilled artist,

His carvings have a certain je ne sais quoi that is charming and inspirational.

Dancing Bear is playing a “qilant”, an Inuit drum made of caribou hide.  For centuries, drumming has been an essential part of Inuit celebrations. Taylor has featured this sculpture in a posture of strength and profound pride as the bear prepares to forcefully strike his drum.

When the sunlight strikes Dancing Bear, the orange-brown Brazilian soapstone radiates energy and warmth. Each meticulously carved detail of the sculpture bears witness to Derald Taylor’s commitment to perfection. Notice the "braiding" down the backs of the legs, arms, and down the chest.  This is one of Taylor's signature carving features.
