This is the second piece from a solo exhibition by Pits Qimirpik in Toronto, titled “Life in Miniature”.
This “Inuk with Walkman Player” is the miniature version of one of the most forward looking and progressive style of Inuit carvings of the 21st century.
In 2010, Pits introduced this genre of carving with “Teen With MP3”. “Teen” was the result of the reality of Pits’ life in the ”modern” Canadian Far North.
Toronto Dominion Bank proudly added this piece to their collection in 2010. Its place in their permanent collection is a testament to Pits’ willingness to innovate and tell the story of the new Far North.
Pits has continued to carve Arctic people and Arctic animals sporting MP3 players and Ipods. We recently had a dancing rabbit listening to his Ipod!
This particular carving is unique in its diminutive size. We are intrigued with the fortitude it takes for an artist to carve a miniature piece.
Perfect in proportion! His facial features are intricately carved. He has swagger and personality! His Walkman is perched on his arm blasting hip hop and rap into his ear.
This carving’s small stature also allows the collector to acquire him at a lower price point.
This Masterful iconic carving is so different and so unique!!! Few collectors will ever own such a venerable and worthy spirit of the modern Canadian North.
Pits Qimirpik introduced this genre of carving in 2010 with “Teen With MP3”. He has been heavily influenced by his reality of living in the now “modern” Canadian Far North.
Canada’s TD bank (Toronto Dominion) proudly acquired the piece in 2010. It remains in their permanent collection as a testament to Qimirpik’s willingness to risk and be innovative.
Pits has changed the Inuit art scene forever and he is recognized globally as a trailblazer. Walkman Player, is another spearhead carving in this genre.
Since then, the hype the buzz and the allure of the "Inuk & MP3" theme has rendered this and similar pieces by Qimirpik as truly iconic masterpieces. This carving is of no exception.
