Inuit art: Walrus
Inuit Artist: Pavinak Petaulassie (1961-2019)
Size: 8" long, 4" tall, 5" wide
Community: Cape Dorset, NU 21
Stone: Serpentine
id: ndc-183-1265304ebjy
Provenance: September 2019 Sadly, Pavinak recently passed away. He was a pillar for the Inuit art community and was well known for his gentle and jolly caribous.
Note** Pavinak has been gone now for two years. When I come across one of his carvings (which is becoming more rare) I feel both sadness and happiness because there is no carver who comes close to his vision and his style.
This sweet baby walrus is lying on the ice, reaching up with flippers as if he was searching for a hug.
Just like a human baby.
I love his perfect small tusks.
He will slowly grow into them and one day he will be the gargantuan walrus that we are so familiar with.
Pavinak had a quirky carving style which is reflected in each of his pieces.
If you are attracted to Ray, look at Petaulassie's A Bearded Caribou.
Every collector deserves a carving by Petaulassie.
