I like to call the relief images that adorn a carved Walrus Tusk "embroidery".
Jonas has taken a unique approach to displaying his embroidered walrus tusk by elevating it a horizontal position with caribou antlers as the base.
The tusk appears to be "swimming" in one direction, allowing the viewer to examine and admire the stunning embroidery.
The tusk is adorned with numerous relief images of cavorting seals, darting fish, a menacing bear and a Sedna.
The tip of the tusk is cleverly carved into a human face with inlaid white eyes with black pupils.
It takes an experienced and talented carver like Jonas to create these tiny realistic eyes.
I was immediately smitten by Compadres because it is a result of Jonas' talent, experience and his courage to be innovative.
