Good Will Hunting is a SPECIAL piece of Vintage Inuit art!
Oqutaq was an exceptionally talented carver who would have been in the first wave of artists whose carvings where promoted to the Montreal Guild by James Houston in the early 1950s.
The ivory is still pristine white; the artistry is sophisticated and unexpected. Many pieces of this vintage are more primal. I was honoured and excited to have this astonishing work cross my desk.

Good Will Hunting is a historically important sculpture.
In 1949, when Sheokjuq Oqutaq carved these two stunning ivory Inuks, he would have been living a traditional life which would have included living in an igloo.
Oqutaq was born in 1920.
In the 1950s, he started carving with James Houston.
His carvings mostly depicted animals, including loons, narwhals, bears, and whales..
The inspiration of this scene is evident with one quick glance.
The Ivory allows the black details like the facial features, hair and parka trim to soar with drama.
The emotions of the faces is exquisite!
And the postures of the man and his son, suggest that we have caught our pair in both a teaching moment and a loving paternal bond!
From November 1988 to January 1989, his work was displayed in an exhibition called "The Sculpture of Sheokjuk Oqutag" at the McMichael Canadian Art Collection.
His works are held in the permanent collections of several museums, including the National Gallery of Canada, the University of Lethbridge Art Collection, the National Museum of the American Indian, the McMichael Canadian Art Collection, and the University of Michigan Museum of Art.
