Uttaq tells a poignant story through this Hunter and Seal.
Piniatoq's hair style, his moustache, and the deep lines in his cheeks, tell you that this man is at least middle aged and his skin has been exposed to the harsh Arctic winds for decades.
His eyelids are droopy and his eyes are staring, as if he is in a daze.
His eyelids show his age.
The deep vertical furrows between his eyes show his stress and hardship.
Maybe he is dazed because he hasn't eaten for hours.
Or maybe Piniatoq is exhausted from waiting for a seal.
The seal is directly below him under the ice.
Is the hunted now stalking the hunter?
Uttaq is a skilled, and imaginative carver. He is well known and respected and one of the more prolific Gjoa Haven artists.
