Masterpiece Carving! Museum quality Sculpture!
Matt Flaherty's walking bear is exquisitely coloured!
What I mean, is that the carving may by secondary to the colour of the stone.
The carving may be the vehicle to show off this stunning colour.
Take a long look at our bear.
The rich torquoise-green flecks are so numerous, they coalesce into a magnificent carpet of colour.
I can't look away from this bear.
I am enchanted with his head and face.
The muzzle of a realistic bear is usually square and chunky but Matt's muzzle is long and pointed. The eyes are shaped more like a cat, slightly slanted and exotic.
Indeed, even the body of the bear is less realistic in style and just the tiniest bit abstract in its form.
Flaherty is a master of the unexpected.
He asks the viewer to take a step away from the usual expectations and entertain possibilities that challenge our perceptions.
Take a look at the work of artists who share the same aesthetic.
For instance, Louis Arnaryuinnaq's The Wind's Howl, Billy Merkosak's Caramel Swirl and Pea Michael's Exhilarating Aqua Green Bear.
