Masterpiece Sculpture!

The muskoxen that Kelly carves are like no other.

But this one .... this muskox is nothing like I have ever seen in all my years as a curator of Inuit art.

Of course, the feature that is I am referring to is the unusual design of the muskox's coat of hair.

Kelly has situated deep pits within the long thick strands of hair. They look like the holes in swiss cheese.

I have racked my brain trying to understand the "holes".

Could it be that when the wind is high and the coat of the muskox is blowing that these "deficits" seem to appear within the coat OR is it simply a design?

Because of these holes, the piece takes on an eerie, supernatural feel. But this is tempered by the more traditional facial features and spectacular headpiece.

I love the square geometric heads that Kelly places on his pieces.

They are masculine and dignified. Our muskox has fierce looking sharp horns which could do serious damage to a predator. The soft green coloured stone always the viewer to easily see every detail of the piece.  It also offeres a softness to the angular sculpture.

Kelly is a master of details.  Notice how he has carved a separate back toe on the muskox's feet instead of including this toe in the hoof.

This love of detail is one of the many reasons I admire Kelly Etidloie.

Kelly does not carve many Muskoxen. This piece would be "something to talk about" in your collection.
