This is an extremely important piece in regards to the development of inuit art. Mary Tutsiutok was born and raised in Arviat. She learned to carve by watching her mother Alice Sakitnak Akammak, and mother-in-law, Lucy (Tasseor) Tutsuitok. Mary carves by hand, without the use of power tools.
The composition of the face in this piece, is minimalist and raw. The rudimentary lines and the proportions of the piece are two dimensional which exaggerates the natural beauty of the stone. The beautiful explosion of color from the beaded necklase adds an additional element of surprise and wowness.
Here Faces reflects the great emotive sculptures created by the Inuit artists from the isolated community of Arviat.
Mary’s signature is her family oriented carvings. They are raw and traditional but also viewed from a different point of view, they are ultra modern and minimalistic.
Her work is sought after and admired.
I didn’t hesitate to acquire this stunning beauty when I saw it.
