HATCH hovers near their nest, guarding his mate and their eggs.
Hatch is a large gorgeous Crane.
Their long neck and short full body make them a favourite subject for Inuit carvers who carve with Muskox horn.
Muskox horn is exotic.
It is smooth and silky.
Ookpik has used the entire half of a muskox headpiece (one of the horns) to sculpt Hatch.
Many of the LARGE cranes come from the Gjoa Haven artists.
The magic of this carving is that the features of the horn ( its curves and angles, the pastel pink hues and the scattered black areas) exactly conform into the shape and details of a crane!
As if it were meant to be.
Ookpik's innovative spirit shines through in this eclectic carving.
