In this enigmatic work, Ishulutaq achieves the spiritedness of the rare double tusk narwhal through delicate balance, crisp lines and an overall fluidity that sparks an electric vibrance from tip to tail.
Justly admired for their graceful elegance and acute disposition, Ishulutaq's works are not solely known for their "robust" content. Although he is famously recognized for his grand-esque whales and sea creatures, it is the finesse and detail that prevail the sometimes overbearing large mass of stone. It is this delicate balance that made Ishulutaq one of the most recognized inuit artists internationally.
This beautiful and poignent sculpture portrays a double-tusk narwhal, a rare variety of breed no doubt. Ishulutaq eloquently captures the narwhal's natural movements and flow through posture alone, conveyed by means of the sparest and subtlest of undulating sculptural forms.
Jaco has earned himself in the ranks as among one of the top five master carvers of this generation. His sense of motion, dynamics and movement are exceptional and a testament to the talents one must posses to be considered among the greats.
Jaco's pieces have toured world wide, have been included in countless publications, Inuit art journals, exhibitions and museums.
This is an exceptional narwhal. The gorgeous dark green / bronze stone set against the very dynamic movement are formidable combinations which make this an exceptional piece. Even though I have seen many narwhals over the years, Jaco somehow manages to make this particular one its own. Quite unique, very modernist with a touch of minimalist style. The posture, movement and stone make this narwhal nothing short of a masterpiece.
