MASTERPIECE CARVING
Note** This is the last owl from a set of 4 white owls Manasie made from a gorgeous slate of white alabaster stone.
Provenance (April 5th, 2019): Manasie bought this gorgeous white alabaster stone a few months ago. With it, he carved these extraordinary white mother cub bears, alongside some exquisite white owls. This is all but the last of this beautiful stone. He had just enough to carve out another two beautiful white chick owls for me. The stone is so divine! These will be his last two white owls for a while.
This is a rare occasion where Manasie has endeared his audience with a smaller treasure. Cut using the same stone as its older sister, this enchanting owl is an opportunity to own one of Inuit arts most celebrated artists.
In this opulent stone of extraordinary vivacity, Manasie perfectly crafts his world famous Owl. With a brilliant tenor and pigmentation, this electrifying white stone exudes serenity and peace.
PROVENANCE - October 4, 2018
I spoke to Manasie and he told me that he is improving the technique he uses to form his carvings’ inlayed eyes.
Instead of using one stone for the inlay, he is now able to use overlapping stones which creates a black border around the eye. Although this is more difficult, it creates more depth and complexity to the eye. This owl is the first piece in which he has used this process and he plans to continue using this technique.
Manasie Akpaliapik has had innumerable prestigious commissions through out his long and illustrious career, culminating in his presentation to the National Art Museum of Canada.
Manasie is not just an elite Master Carver, he is one of the few premier Master Carvers.
The brilliance of this Owl, resides in the contrast between the yellow inlaid eyes and the brilliant white marble of the body. This is Manasie’s trademark; his ability to fashion this ocular miracle with bravado and panache.
Owl’s body is sculpted to create subtle movement. The observer appreciates the spirit of life emanating from this powerful predator. However, the subtle grey pigmentation reminds us that the breath of this creature is an illusion. This owl will live forever as the masterfully carved sculpture that it is!
