In this rendition of a walking bear, Pootoogook brilliantly fuses surface texture into the beautiful coloration of the speckled serpentine stone.
This piece is quite large and chubby: a sophisticated Teddy Bear with an Inuit edge.
The speckled Aqua brown serpentine stone is dramatic and magnetic. Multi-colored carvings like this one, are my favourite as the coloured veins coursing across the stone form a wonderful contrast to the brown coloured stone.
I love the alert posture of this bear. He resembles a hunting dog with his nose scenting the air and his front paw held up and flexed. Bears are credited with the keenest sense of smell in the animal kingdom. Polar bears have been known to follow and scent seals for up to 40 miles.
The colours of this carving are explosive. The lines are terse and tight. This bear is completely perfect with his own individual personality and rare colouration. A perfect carving for a collection in need of an incomparable spirit.
