Provenance: James Alivaktuk (Pangirtung, NU) recently carved this stunning composition using two whalebones. Tusk! Tusk! is this year's prized piece in the Gallery. This is a spectacular piece that will surely one day find a home in a National Museum.
Masterpiece Carving! Museum quality Sculpture!
Some of the most inspirational Inuit art is carved using whalebone and ivory.
For me, the inspiration of Tusk! Tusk! is the imagination and the ability of an artist to create a piece with such complexity and beauty.
Bone is a medium that demands the artist to work within its strict boundaries.
A bony prominence or a large hole must be seen as a deliberate part of the PLAN and not an obstacle.
To say that James has met this parameter is an understatement.
I had to make Tusk! Tusk! a CURATOR'S CHOICE.
Tusk! is a collage of a seated young woman whose throne is the head of a large walrus! She is full of excitement as if preparing herself for flight on her magical "carpet" ride,
At the base of this animal/human friendship is a bird whose job it is to provide balance and stability to the pair.
You will find yourself examining this one of a kind carving over and over, each time discovering little nooks and crannies with great delight.
Imagine!
Tusk! Tusk! greeting you everyday in your home or office.
