Bone carvings have a distinctive spirit when compared to stone.

Since bone is an animal and not a mineral, perhaps there is a sense of a previous life within the bone.

The bone has more inconsistencies than stone, ie, pores, thin layers, large cavities, and  a common ivory colour sometimes speckled with a brown colour

The carver must incorporate these characteristics into the piece which often results in some stunning sculptures.

Let There be Light is a charming piece.

We see an Inuit woman kneeling on the ground, while using a qulliq which is carved from stone.

A qulliq is a "stove" fueled with seal oil which can be used for light or cooking.

I love the detailed face and hair of our woman.

She is serene and focused on the job at hand.

Her body is a perfect example of how Kudluk has fashioned the piece around the bone which gives the carving an abstract look.

Remarkable!

I have never seen a bone piece quite like Let There be Light.

Having this piece in your collection would be a coup.
